From My Other Blog - No Longer Mine
I can’t take their work off the walls. With two days left my classroom still looks as if we have all the time in the world, but we don’t. On Thursday our journey ends and a new one begins for these incredible 23 students that I have been lucky enough to call my kids. When I am asked what I am passionate about, many people assume technology, or writing, or math. Sure, I love...

Math – This unit will be wrapped up on Monday with review Tuesday and test on Thursday. The test is very simple, which is why it has been moved up a day. The students have already started the end of year test and we are doing it bit by bit every day. Science – We discussed and built background knowledge for the Moon and students have been sharing their observations with me as well. We have...

Night Sky Log
Our next unit of investigation is the Moon, so students will be asked to observe the Moon once a night for the next 2 weeks. This is not mandatory, however, I encourage at least several observations. The process is:
View the Moon
Glue in the appropriate Moon phase picture (provided) in their Night Sky Log
Write in date and time
Record a few comments about your observation of the sky. Can...

May 13, 2011 I know there has been a rumor going around that I may be moving to 5th grade next year and while I would go to the end of the earth for these kids, I will be staying in 4th grade. This has been such an incredible year, we have done amazing things, but the kids are ready for bigger challenges and new jokes! Math - We are in the middle of review for this rather random unit. The test...

Math – We are working on a mixed unit this week and have so far explored relationships between metric measurements, volume and capacity, and also geometric solids. We are working in study teams much like the middle school, which has been an interesting approach for the students. It is great to see the different responsibilities being shared rather than just one student taking ownership. The...

Parent Appreciation - from my blog
This week as I bask in the adoration that is teacher appreciation week at my school, I am often reminded of just how much people care and what an incredible feeling that is. However, I am also reminded of how I am not alone in this adventure of teaching, how my decisions and ideas only can go so far without the support of parents. So I think it is time we introduce parent appreciation into our...

Math - We finished unit 10 yesterday and the students did so well. On Monday we begin unit 11, which is a mixed unit focusing on weight, geometric solids and volume/capacity. We will also be introducing study teams, where the students are each given a role as part of their team. This is something we will use quite a bit for the rest of the year as it provides the students with an opportunity to...

A Conversation about Hans Christian Andersen
Today we welcomed Nete Schmidt, my mother who happens to be a professor at the UW. She teaches a class on Hans Christian Andersen so she agreed to come out here and speak to us about him. I was so impressed with the students, many had prepared questions for her such as “where did he find his inspiration,” “why did he start to write,” and many more questions came up during...

Math - We are almost done with unit 10, so the test is scheduled for this coming Thursday. There are only two units left of the year after that. Social Studies - Lumberjacks are coming along, the students love it, and we are all very excited about the Lumberjack Breakfast on May 25th. The students built models of lumberjack tools and explained their use to the class. A video of the process can...

Math – We start our new unit today which is reflection, symmetry, and negative numbers. The students did wonderfully on the math tests, which should be sent home today or Monday. This unit is also a very short unit so the test will be within the next week or two. Science – Presentations of projects starts on Monday. We plan to start Sun, Moon, and Stars within the next week or so. No...
